What this is

Effective September 8, 2026. voltabench is a course tool operated by the instructor named below at the Monfort College of Business, University of Northern Colorado. You build diagrams and programs in it, run them, and submit them for grading. Your instructor uses it as part of teaching the course.

Questions about anything on this page: support@voltabench.com.

What we collect, and why

The “how you work” records are tied to your account by an internal identifier only. Your name and email do not appear inside them.

What we do not collect

Keystrokes. Per-character edits. Mouse movement, hover, or scrolling. Anything outside the voltabench editor, including other tabs and other applications. Location. Contacts. Advertising identifiers.

We do not build a profile that follows you. There is no stored rating, no learner type, and no permanent flag; those columns do not exist. There are no third-party advertising or analytics trackers on this site, we do not sell or share your data, and we do not use student work to train machine-learning models.

Your instructor does see counts and lists about how their course is going. What those are is described below.

Two things to know

Who can see what

What your instructor does with it

Besides reading your work directly, your instructor gets some counting: who has not started an assignment, who is working but has not handed anything in, and who has hit repeated errors without getting a submission through. These lists are recomputed from current work every time the page is opened.

Nothing is stored as a label on your account. Nothing carries over to another course or another semester, and no list changes a grade by itself. Problems with the tool itself are counted separately and are never counted against you.

This is what voltabench is for. A course is easier to teach when the person teaching it can see who to check on.

Education records and FERPA

When voltabench is used as part of a course, everything described above is an education record belonging to your institution, and voltabench processes it on that institution's behalf as a school official with a legitimate educational interest.

You may ask to see the records voltabench holds about you, ask for corrections, and ask what has been disclosed. Contact support@voltabench.com. Grade corrections go through your instructor; account corrections through the operator. You may also contact the UNC Registrar, and you have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Family Policy Compliance Office.

Research

Your instructor may study how students learn using de-identified voltabench records, under a protocol reviewed by the University of Northern Colorado IRB. Records used for research go through a pseudonym table that replaces your account identifier; your name, email and course are never in a research dataset.

Any survey or activity that is research and not coursework will ask for your consent separately. This page discloses; it does not consent. Declining never affects your grade.

Where the data lives

On servers we operate, hosted in the United States, with encrypted backups. Traffic is encrypted in transit. Passwords are stored hashed and are never recoverable in plain text. Code you write runs in an isolated sandbox with no network access and hard time and memory limits.

A small number of providers handle hosting, email delivery, and optional sign-in on our behalf under contract. They process your data only to provide that service and never for their own purposes. Grades are never sent by email and never leave the servers described above. If you want to know which providers those are, ask support@voltabench.com.

How long we keep it

For the semester and for the period the university requires grade records to be kept. Records used for research are kept for the window stated in the IRB protocol and then reduced to the pseudonymized dataset. Ask your instructor or registrar about the institution's retention schedule.
